Meet the Oil- Ask Your Therapist
Shock wave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to help the body heal and repair itself. It's often used to treat chronic injuries and pain in soft tissues, such as those caused by plantar fasciitis or sports injuries like tennis elbow.
Here's some information about shock wave therapy:
How it works
Shock wave therapy stimulates the body's natural healing processes by promoting new blood vessel formation, which increases circulation and delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the treated area. It also activates cells that help rebuild tendons and muscles, and are essential for bone healing.
Treatment sessions
Typically, 3–5 sessions are required, with the exception of bone and spasticity treatments, which are done at weekly intervals.
After treatment
You can return to your normal activities right away, but you should avoid high-impact exercise for 48 hours. You can take paracetamol if you feel discomfort, but avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen.
Pain
Shock wave therapy is only mildly uncomfortable for most people.
Shock wave therapy was first used in the early 1980s as a noninvasive treatment for kidney stones, known as lithotripsy.
